The man who accompanies Rover (image 5) is quoting Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Book 3: “quique halitus exit/ Ore niger Stygio vitiatas inficit auras” (a breath like that from the mouth of the black Styx fouls the corrupted air). I’d say this is either the artist’s Latin tutor, or a man with very bad breath (or perhaps both).
