Major Kasey Reported the Outcome of an Election

This election return of the 58th Virginia Regiment, Company E, was written and certified by John G. Kasey (1841–1902) on August 19, 1862. The Company was at that time near Orange Court House and had held an election on the previous day to replace the regiment's deceased captain, William P. H. Brown, who had died of a fever in Franklin County on August 3, 1862. Brown had held the position for only three months. During the first part of the Civil War, soldiers in volunteer companies were sometimes allowed to elect their company officers.
