The Richmond Planet Printed a List of Lynched Persons

This clipping is from the Saturday, January 4, 1890, issue of the Richmond Planet, edited by John Mitchell Jr. (1863–1929). The Planet was an influential African American weekly newspaper that covered local, national, and worldwide news and also took a strong position against racial injustice, especially lynching. The left side of the clipping contains a love poem entitled “You Kissed Me,” by Josephine S. Hunt. On the right is a graphic listing of African Americans lynched in the South.
