Gaines family letter, 1862 April 30
Papers, 1862, including accounts and letters of the Gaines family of Charlotte County, Virginia. The bulk of the letters were written to and from Richard V. Gaines while serving with the Staunton Hill Artillery in Georgia, Maryland, and North Carolina. Topics include troop movements, camp life, thoughts on the war and slavery, rations, health, and the battle of Shepherdstown, [West] Virginia. Also of note are the suggestions and thoughts Gaines offers to his wife regarding the running of the farm and plantation in Charlotte County, Virginia.
