Gaines family letter, 1863 July 22
Papers, 1863, including letters and telegrams of the Gaines family of Charlotte County, Virginia. The bulk of the papers were to and from Richard Gaines while serving with the Staunton Hill Artillery in Georgia and North Carolina. Topics include troop movements, battles, camp life, thoughts on the war and issues of the times, and health. The letters between Richard and his wife, Jane, detail the running of their plantation, crops, and family. Jane Gaines died on 23 December 1863.
