Abstract

Claude Swanson Rice was born in Halifax County, Virginia, 21 September 1921. He entered military service 22 September 1942 and served in the 83rd Chemical Battalion. Rice was captured by the enemy 11 or 12 December 1944 and was a prisoner of war for the rest of World War II. He was honorably discharged 24 August 1945. Rice married Mildred Louise Rice Morris (b. 1924) and they had children. Rice died 2 April 2003 in Durham, North Carolina, and was buried in the Virgilina Cemetery in Halifax County.
