The Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth, Virginia, was chartered on April 15, 1920. Kiwanis Clubs originally sought to promote business networking, but by 1919, their focus switched to community services, especially those devoted to the benefit of children. The club established the Fresh Air Farm for Underpriviledged Children in 1926; the first year the Farm welcomed 77 children for 2 week visits to the farm during the months of July and August. Many Kiwanis Clubs continue to host Fresh Air Camps across the United States.
