To the Honorable John Brown Chancellor of the Western District of Virginia Humbly Complaining thereof unto you Honour your orator John Hook of Franklin County. That previous to the year 1804 your orator had been possessed of a female Mulatto Slave named Nanny for upwards of seventeen years. That about the year 1802 your orator having a controversy with a certain David Ross depending in the High Court of Chancery, the Chancellor for some Contempt supposed to have been committed by your orator awarded a writ of Sequestration by Virtue of which a larger proportion of your orators property was Sequestered and among other Slaves the said Slave Nanny then on one of your orators plantations in Burks Fork in Montgomery was taken by the Commissioners & hired publicly to a certain Zecheriah Henly in the said County being as
