Meshac Mears boating permission 1865
OFFICE OF ASST. PROVOST MARSHAL, EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA, Drummondtown, Va., March 1st 1864-5 Permission is hereby given to Meshac Mears to own and keep in his service one Canoe this day entered in this office, and numbered 225 to be used in the waters of Gargety Creek for the purpose of Fishing & Oystering for the term of six months, with the conditions that the owner of said boat shall paint upon its right bow, in plain figures the number 225, and shall only use it for the purpose above indicated, and if said boat shall be at any time found to be used for smuggling, or communicating with the enemy, or holding intercourse with the shore outside the military lines, it shall be forfeited to the United States, and its owner, with all who may be taken on board, shall be imprisoned for not less than six months.
