To the Honorable the speaker and members of the house of delegates of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The petition of Catherine Bond of the County of Lancaster in the said State humbly represents That a negro man slave called Daniel the property of your petitioner, charged with the murder of one William Mitchell of the said County was arraigned before the County court of Lancaster & found guilty of the crime with which he stood charged. That in compliance with an act of the General assembly in that case made and provided the court proceeded to value the said negro Daniel and decided that he was worth only $78.37 which your petitioner considers a very inadequate compensation for the loss of her property. Your petitioner will beg leave to state that the said negro Daniel was a very strong healthy young man, that she had frequently been offered from £ 90 to £ 100 for him and she is informed that the courts opinion of his value was
