To the honorable the Legislature of Virginia The petition of Alexander Smith of the County of Allegheny & State of Maryland humbly complaining respectfully sheweth. That Eighteen years ago your petitioner purchased Sundry large tracts of Land, some lying in the State of Maryland and others in the State of Virginia: That he has lately disposed of a tract of land lying in the Said State of Maryland on which he has resided Sixteen years or thereabouts which tract is situate in the Said County of Allegheny and only Seperated from the State of Virginia by the North Branch of Potomack, which at the aforesaid Place is very Narrow, and within nine miles of its Source: That since the Sale of the aforesaid tract of land your petitioner wishes to remove to, and Settle upon the land he owns in the said State of Virginia, and which he has held for these eighteen years past: and being possessed of fourteen Slaves, he wishes to be permitted to bring with him into the Said State of Virginia into the County of Monongalia seven or more Slaves being part of the aforesaid number of fourteen Viz.
