To the Honorable the Speaker & members of both Houses of the General Assembly of the State of Virginia. The Petition of Asa Varnum of the town of Cabellsville, County of Nelson and State of Virginia, humbly sheweth that some time in the year of 1808 your petitioner married a wife in the state of Georgia, who possessed several negro slaves, to wit, Soloman, Jesse, Cloe and her four children, Alexander & his wife Pleasant and her children, Celia & her children, that the laws of this state prohibits him from bringing said slaves into it and that your petitioner prayeth that a special law may pass granting him permission to bring into this Commonwealth said slaves, of which your petitioner is a Citizen, and that he may hold them in peaceable possession, as in duty bound your petitioner will ever pray.
