Cabellsville 4 Decr. 1809 Mr Joseph C. Cabell Sir I take the liberty to request that you will as a representative of this county do me the favour to [peruse at? present?] the enclosed petition, from which you will see my particular case, and correct anything that may be improper in form, and lay it before the Assembly. The law which prohibits slaves from being brought into this Commonwealth, bears extremely hard on me, in this case. These negroes were raised by my Father-in-law and given to my wife, and are favourite servants. To part with favorite servant and run the risk of getting back or even indifferent ones in lieu thereof is a hardship which women do not like to venture on. I hope you will duely [duly] consider my case and use your influence with the Hon'ble Assembly to grant me relief. I am Sir your Most obt sert [obedient servant]. Asa Varnum
