To the Honorable the Speakers and Members of the General Assembly of Virginia, your Petitioner Thurston I. Dickinson of the County of Nelson states to your Honorable Body that he has a negro Man by the name of Isaac who had a negro woman for his wife by the name of Jane who was the property of a certain [blank] Smith who some time in the year 1814 emigrated to the state of Kentucky carrying the sd.slave Jane with him, that some few months after the removal of the sd. woman to the state of Kentucky sd. Isaac went off in pursuit of the sd. woman and actually got to the house of the sd. Smith in the state of Kentucky before he was apprehended, the sd. Isaac refused peremptorily to return without his sd. wife, your Petitioner under these cicrumstances was induced to purchase the sd. Negro woman and brot her back into this state not knowing that he had violated the laws of this commonwealth, untill a few months ago, he therefore prays yr Honble. Body to pass a Law releasing him from all fines & penalties which he may have subjected himself to removal of the sd. Slave Jane into this Commonwealth and that your Honorable Body will pass a Law, authorizing yr Petitioner to retain & hold the said Slave in this commonwealth & he in duty will &c. Thurston I.
