was refused upon the ground that the said slave had not been executed according to the sentence of the Court. Your petitioner respectfully suggests that this construction of the law does him great injustice; that he had no control whatever over the said slave after he was arrested by the civil authorities, and that he did not connive at or aid or abet in any manner his escape, but on the contrary used all the means in his power to have the said slave secured until the day of his execution. Your petitioner, therefore, respectfully prays that an Act may be passed by your honorable body directing the proper officer to pay him the value of the said slave as fixed by the Court, and to this end your petitioner humbly prays.
