To the Honorable General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Petition of Nicholas Cleary, late of County of Prince William, now a citizen of the State of Wisconsin, humbly showeth. That Thomas Reilly Cleary, aged 9 years, infant son of your petitioner, and grandson of Thomas Reilly deceased, is the owner of a slave named Margaret now in the city of Norfolk in this State, in which slave the said Thomas Reilly now deceased had a life estate. That your petitioner moved with his family, (including his said infant son) from Virginia to Wisconsin, during the life time of said Thomas Reilly, so that his said infant son Thomas Reilly Cleary has acquired the right to the possession of said slave since his removal from Virginia. Your petitioner further shows that by the Constitution of Wisconsin no person can be held in slavery there, therefore the said Margaret cannot be carried to that state and be held as the property of the said Thomas R. Cleary. Your petitioner further shows that in consequence of his very [innate?] residence from the City of Norfolk he cannot attend
