The State of Kentucky Boone County} Sct [scilicet] The affidavit of Abner Gaines taken at the office of Vawter & Armstrong in the town of Burlington County of Boone and state of Kentucky on the 23d day of November 1832 to be used as evidence in the Virginia Legislature or else where for the purpose of recovering the value of a negroe man slave the property of Wm. Vawter named Cary who was hanged by the laws of said state and never paid for. This affiant being of lawful age states, that his father James Gaines was deputy Sheriff in the county of Orange state of Virginia for several years before his death, that he was acting as such at the time of the execution, of the above negro Cary, that he employed a certain Jack Thomas to perform the duty, which was done in a bungling manner by sd. [said] Thomas that as well as this affiant now recollects it was done in the year 1782 that the said negro was condemned for the crime of rape on a white woman, and executed at Orange Ct. House
