State of Virginia Orange County, I Richard White of the county and state aforesaid do hereby certify that William Vawter who was a resident of this county in the date 1782 had a negro man by the name of Cary, bought before my father Jeremiah White who was a justice of the peace for the County of Orange, charged with the crime of rape was by him committed to the county jail was there tried convicted and hanged[.] I was well acquainted with Mr. William Vawter & family and all the circumstances attending the matter. Given under my hand this 31st day Oct 1832 } Richd. White

Orange County to wit This day Richard White came before me a justice of the peace for the county aforesaid and made oath that the above certificate contained the true nature of the case. Given under my hand this thirty first day of October 1832[.] Daniel White
