they believe it will operate as an incouragement, by exhibiting the just reward, to use the lestator's [legislature's] language "of long and steady attachment, of unwearied industry, perseverance, and honesty" Without appealing, therefore, to the humanity of the Legislature; without attempting to depict the deep distress that must ensure the removal of an old man to a "returnless distance" from his property, from his home, and from his family, your petitioners respectfully pray, that an act may pass, allowing the emancipation of the said Slave, within this commonwealth, and that the bounty of his Master, the reward of his exemplary conduct, may bless the evening days of poor old Jingo, in his Native Town & in the bosom of his family.
