To the Honorable the Speaker and the House of Delegates of Virginia: The petition of Emor Harlan, of the Town of Petersburg, humbly representeth to your honorable body, that in March 1818, he bought a slave by the name of Sharper, sometimes called Sharper Munford: That the said slave was formerly owned by Robert Pleasants who was entitled to hold the said Sharper in slavery until he became 30 years of age, in pursuance of the will of Johnathan Pleasants, deceased; That the said Sharper was a descendant of one of the slaves of Johnathan Pleasants decd. directed to be emancipated by his will & would not be entitled to his freedom, according to the documents exhibited herewith, until the 1st day of September 1822; That early in the year 1817 your Petitioner purchased the said slave Sharper, for the balance of his term of slavery unexpired, it being about four
