At a Called Court held for the Town of Petersburg at the Courthouse of the said town Saturday the 15th day of August 1818 for the Examination of Sharper Munford held as a slave by Emor Harlan, but claiming to be free when he shall attain the age of Thirty years; Charged with Feloniously taking & stealing a gilt or metal watch from the possession of Wm. Woodrow, on the night of the 7th Instant. Present Donald Mckinzie Recorder Edwd Powell } Thomas Wallace } John H. Brown } Jabez Smith } Aldermen The said Sharper Munford was brought to the Barr in Custody of the sergiant [sergeant] of this town to whose charge for the cause aforesaid he had been committed & upon examination, several witnesses being sworn, charged, and examined on the premises and the prisoner, by his council, heard in his own defence, on consideration whereof It is the opinion of the Court, that the said Sharper Munford, ought to be tried for the said supposed fact at the next Superior Court, to be held for the County of Prince George, on the 22nd day of September next, & thereupon he is remanded to Jail. The Minutes of these proceedings are signed D. Mackenzie Recorder I do certify That the foregoing is a true copy extracted from the records of the said Court in my possession now as Clerk thereof.
