Brandonville Va July 19, 1849 Gen. B. Fairfax Dr. [Dear] Sir Enclosed please find the petition of a member of your Constituency here praying for the passage of an act of the legislature permitting Catharine Pauham a free woman of color to remain in this state. You will please do us the honor of presenting said petition to the Legislature and exercising your influence toward obtaining the passage of the same, the nature of the case as far & as accurate as we can state it is this; Catharine was born in Hardy County & raised in the family of Mr. Ignatius Hayes of said county - became a resident of this county about the 30th Jany last & obtained her freedom about 13th said month. She has never associated with people of her own color, & has a great aversion to any such associations, & urges this as a reason why, she is so desires of being permitted to remain here, she is now in the employment of Dr. P. M. Sturgis who furnishes the [verry?] list testimonials of character and would further state that if an act (illegible) be obtained
