To the Legislature of the State of Virginia Moses Duffy of the County of Prince William begs leave respectfully to Petition your Hon: body [Honorable Body] - For that Whereas Thomas Stone late of the County of Charles and State of Maryland who departed this life in the first part of this present year, by his last Will (which is of record in the orphans Court of the Said County of Charles) Devised to his Daughter Mary Duffy who is the wife of your petitioner a certain Negro girl slave named Jenny about ten years of age - and Whereas by the Law now in force in this Commonwealth prohibiting the bringing of Slaves therein your Petitioner must [illegible] the benefit of Said negro, except he removes out of the State of which he has been long a resident or disposes of said Negro, Which from his wifes particular attachment to it being the only Legacy left her by her Father and the only Negro owned by your petitioner he is unwilling to do. He therefore prays that a Law may be enacted giving leave to him the said Moses Duffy to bring into this Commonwealth the aforesaid Negro
