To the Honourable, the Members of the General Assembly of Virginia: The Petition of Charles T. Grills, of the County of Pulaski, would respectfully represent to your Honourable body, that on the 1st day of March last past, Willis a negro slave, the property of your Petitioner was arraigned before a Court of Oyer and Terminer in said County on a charge of attempting to commit a Rape on the person of Elizabeth White, a free white woman, and was by the said Court thereof convicted and sentenced to suffer death, which sentence was duly executed on the 12th day of April 1844 by the Sheriff of Pulaski County: all which will fully appear by reference to a transcript of the record and certificate of the sheriff accompanying this Petition. Your Petitioner would further represent that in ascertaining the value of said Slave the Justices composing said Court of Oyer and Terminer were governed by the provisions of the Act of the General Assembly, passed at the Revisal of 1819, and were without any knowledge that any other act of Assembly relative thereto, had been subsequently passed. The value of said Slave, thus ascertained, was fixed by said Court at Five Hundred and Seventy Five dollars, which was in the usual manner, certified to the Auditor of Public Accounts, and payment thereof demanded by your Petitioner, which was refused, in consequence of the omission on the part of said Court of Oyer and Terminer to con[form]
