[drawing with notation] "The Forward Gun" Argonne - Meuse Offensive 1918 Roger McElhone Smith 2nd Lt. 304 F.A. A.E.F. THE FORWARD GUNS "How the 75's did brace up the morale of the Infantry! A few 75's were always assigned to advance with the first lines. The gun crews would pull their pieces out into the open and blaze away at the fast retreating Boche. It needed quick work, because the Infantry kept right on going, and the exposed positions of the forward guns drew plenty of enemy fire. Nothing by mobile, quick-firing artillery could do this kind of a job - in fact nothing but the trusty old 75!" (Copyright 1919 By Snead & Co.)
