in the county of Shenandoah, where by his untiring industry, economical habits, and correct deportment & the confidence of the people of said county, which he now possesses in an eminent degree; he may procure a competent & honest sub[s]istence and be the better enabled to accomplish the human & laudable object of redeeming his wife & child, for a valuable consideration from bondage and servitude. In testimony of the facts as set forth in this petition, your honorable body are respectfully referred to the certificates accompanying the same & to the proofs which may be had in the good opinion entertained of your Petitioner by the present Delegates elect from the county of Shenandoah. Woodstock Dec 28th 1836 Hon. Sir, Enclosed you will find a Petition of Ben a free man of color, supplicating the passage of a law for permission to remain within the state. In accordance with his wishes, together with a thorough conviction of the propriety of the measure, intimately acquainted as I am with the character & circumstances of the Petitioner, I have drawn up his papers, & now beg leave to entrust them to your care & confidence, expressing at the same time an ardent hope that you will give them such direction & lend them such aid as you in your wisdom may deem most expedient. Should the Petition succeed through your efforts - you will not only receive the humble blessing of your persecuted petitioner, but will merit & share the warmest praises of your townsmen and the thanks of the citizens of your County.
