Woodstock Dec. 29th 1836 I hereby certify that I was once the owner of negro Ben, that with a view to his emancipation I transferred him to Michael Barr by whom he was set free. Ben always was an honest, industrious & sober man- gentlemanly in his manner & esteemed by all who knew him. Were he permitted by law to remain within the state, I have not doubt - he would conduct himself as an orderly and peacable citizen. Given under my hand the 29th Decr 1836 John Dirting
