With respect to the death of the negro man, Joe, who was killed on the 24th Decem. 1808, I have to certify, on the request of Mr. Samuel Templeman, that he was shot, under the orders of Capt. Gerard McKenney, who said he was authorized by Colo [Colonel] George Garner such orders. His commands were, to search all negro cabins and take away all hostile weapons, to apprehend every negro who was found from home, and to take him, dead or alive, if he resisted or worse.
