At a Court of Oyer and terminer held for the County of Powhatan at Scottsville on Tuesday the first day of October one thousand seven hundred and Eighty two. Present in Court William Smith, Thomas Turpin, Robert Smith, Richard Crump and Thomas Harris Gent. Justices Peter a male slave the property of Chastain Cocke of the County of Amelia was brought to the bar in custody of the Sheriff, and charged with assembling with sundry other persons on the plantation of Obadiah Smith in the night time of he [left blank] day of August one thousand seven hundred & eight two and then and there with force and arms feloniously did set fire to burn down and destroy a barn the property of the said Smith with sundry other things, to wit: a parcel of wheat, two carts and a riding chair of the value of one hundred pounds. The said Peter being put on his tryal, plead Guilty and for such his offence the Court are of opinion he ought to be hanged by the neck until he be dead, but that the same be respited untill Satturday the twelveth of this Instant, when the Sheriff of this County is ordered to do execution thereof in the forenoon of that day.
