To the Worshipful Court of Pittsyl. [Pittsylvania] County Rosanna Johnson Humbly showeth unto your Worships that she was brought from the state of Maryland in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty two She was brought in to this State by a certain Peter Purkins and sold as a slave which she [knows? conceives?] is contrary to an act of assembly in this Case made and provided passes the 5th day of Octob. 1778 an intitled an act for the preventing the further importation of slaves into this state and in any state should be imported contrary to the afsd. act shall upon such importation become free the said Rosanna Johnson informs this Court that she is now held in slavery by Robert Tucker which is contrary to the afsd. act where upon she [envisions? conceives?] herself liberated and free, and prays this Court to direct that she should not be confined any longer in slavery, and that the sd. Peter Perkhins & R Tucker may be supped. to show cause why they hold her in slavery & she will ever pray &c.
