To the Honorable Fleming Saunders Judge of the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery for the County of Pittsylvania The Petition of Henry Carter of the County of Pittsylvania respectfully represents unto your Honor that Samuel Carter and John Carter his two infant children and in whose behalf your petitioner now appears, are now in the custody of Isaac Brumfield and William Keesee and that they are illegally and against their consent retained in the custody of the said Isaac Brumfield and William Keesee, and deprived of their liberty by them. Your petitioner represents that the said Samuel and John Carter, are residents of the County of Pittsylvania, that they are free born, and that they are now entitled to their freedom and liberty, and that the said Brumfield & Keesee have no right whatever to detain them in this custody the said Samuel and John Carter, or to deprive them of their freedom and liberty. Therefore your petitioner prays your Honor to award him the writ of Habeas corpus, directed to the Sheriff of Pittsylvania commanding him to bring before you the bodies of the said Samuel and John Carter, and also the said Isaac Brumfield and William Keesee may be summoned to state the causes of the detention of the said Samuel and John Carter so that they may be enquired into, and relief afforded them.
