The grand jurors of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in and for the Corporation of the City of Richmond, duly summoned to attend the Court of Hustings for the city of Richmond held by the Judge thereof, upon their oath present that Abby G. Hoeflick on the fifteenth day of August in the year eighteen hundred and sixty four, at the city of Richmond and within the jurisdiction of this Court, in and upon the body of a certain female child slave (whose name is unknown to the jurors aforesaid) the property of Jacob N. Hoeflick, then and on divers other days within two months before that day, with force and arms, feloniously wilfully and of her malice aforethought, did there make divers assaults; and that she the said Abby G. Hoelflick, then and on divers other days within two months before that day, with a certain leather thong and with a brickbat, in and upon the naked back, sides, shoulders, belly, loins, chest and body of the said female child slave, did there feloniously wilfully and of her malice aforethought, violently, cruelly and excessively strike, beat, scourge and whip; by means of which said violent, cruel and excessive striking, beating scourging and whipping in and upon the naked back, sides, shoulders, belly loins, chest and body of her the said female child slave by the said Abby G. Hoeflick, in the manner aforesaid, she the said female child slave became nervously depressed and exhausted
