To the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia Your petitioner Samuel Johnston Humbly represents that some years past by his industry & faithful services, he procured his emancipation, that afterwards by a life of activity & honesty he procured the means & became the owner of his wife Patty & Daughter Lucy, that at this time he has no other child & his wife from her advanced age can bear no more - that the habits & course of life pursued by his said wife & daughter are such as to recommend them to the favour & good opinion of all the citizens of this county who know them, that your petitioner is anxious & desirous to have them freed with liberty to remain in the county of Fauquier where he has acquired comfortable real estate for their maintenance, that he thinks the exemplary conduct of himself & his wife & daughter entitles them to the kindness of your honorable body, he therefore prays that an act may be passed to authorize the emancipation thereby of his said wife & daughter - and your petitiioner will ever pray &c.
