[left side of page] Warrenton Va 10 Decr paid 25 Colo. Robert Wallace Richmond City Va Mail Ef-4 [right side of page] Fauquier County Court, 1st December 1826. A petition of Fanny Smith, Eleanor Smith and Harriet Smith, who are detained in slavery by William B. Cordell, to sue the said William B Cordell in this Court for the recovery of their freedom in forma pauperis, was this day presented to the Court; and the material facts of the case being stated in the said petition, and proved to the satisfaction of the Court, Thomas L. Moore and John S. Horner were assigned their Counsel, and the said Counsel having made a statement to the Court of the circumstances of the case, with their opinion thereupon that the said Fanny, Eleanor & Harriet are entitled to their freedom, they are allowed to sue the said Wm. B. Cordell, in this Court, for the recovery of their freedom, in forma pauperis. And it is ordered that the clerk issue process against the said Wm. B. Cordell to answer the complaint; and that the petitioners be taken by the Sheriff of this County into his custody until the said Wm. B. Cordell shall give bond with security in the penalty of eighteen hundred dollars, either in court, or with the Clerk of the Court, to have the said petitioners forthcoming to answer the judgment of the Court in the premises. And it is further ordered that the said Wm. B. Cordell do not presume to beat or misuse the said petitioners on this account, but suffer them to come to the Clerk's office for Subpoenas for their witnesses, and to attend their examinations and the trail.
