To the Honorable the Legislature of Virginia the petition of Jane Bell a freewoman of colour of the county of Fauquier humbly represents that she was left free by the will of Abraham Waters which is duly recorded in the Office of said county in consequence of her good conduct, that she has since always conducted herself as a discreet and good citizen, but your petitioner knowes that the Law of this state will not permit her to remain permanently therein and being exceedingly anxious to remain in the Land of her nativity and of her fathers prays that a Law may be passed authorizing her residence permanently in this State. Your petitioner begs leave to refer your honorable body to the number and respectability of the annexed list of subscribers to attest her worthiness to ask and attain her prayer Jane Bell
