To the Honorable Members of the Va. Legislature

You petioner Saml [Samuel] Johnston a free man of colour humbly represents, that in consideration of your petitioners faitful [faithful] services, and strong claims to public favour an act for his emancipation was passed by your by your honorable body in the year of that your petitioner has subsequently acquired the ownership of his wife Patty and daughter Lucy, that Patty is advanced in years and no longer bear children. that the upright character of Patty and Lucy has acquired for them the esteem and respect of all. That your petitioner with those feelings nautural to all mankind , whose lives are unblemished with vice or crime possesses an anxious desire that is wife and daughter should be free and reside with him in the land of their nativity where he has realised property sufficent for their support. Your petitioner therefore hopes that the pursuit of an object to him most ardent and most dear, with not be offensive to your honorable body, humbly requests than an act of your honorable body may be passed and your petitioner as in duty bound will forever pray.
