To the General Assembly of Virginia Your petitioner Lucy Malvin, respectfully represents that she was on the 27 day of Sept in the year 1826 married with all the observances of law and of the christian church to Spencer Malvin, a free man of colour. That she lived with said Malvin, as his wife for seven years and bore him three children. That during this period their union was marked with as much contentment and satisfaction as usually falls to the lot of persons in that rank in life. A few months after the disturbances in Southhampton, Spencer became dissatisfied, and insisted on removing to a free state. He made preparations to move off, and without apprising your petitioner (who was averse to the measure) he absconded from his residence (having inveigled a slave by the name of Sandy to go with him. Sandy was recovered by his master, Mr. J.L. Furst of Warrenton, and such evidence of Spencers participation in his flight were in the possession of Mr. Faust, that the return of Spencer was rendered unsafe. Spencer has remained in the state of Pennsylvania ever since and has shown no inclination to claim your petitioner as his wife, or to acknowledge the obligations of a husband or a father, on the contrary your petitioner has been informed, & verily believed that he has forsaken her and his children by her, and has taken another woman with whom he has been living for some years.Your petitioner can exhibit the highest testimonial of character, she humbly avouches her past life, in which she has ever respected the laws of the land and the ordinances of Gods holy Church. She is now 33 years of age, and she desires to continue that line of conduct which whilst it gives her the blessing of an approving conscience, at the same time insures her the kindness and respect of the world.Under these circumstances, honestly be- Hd-1
