Jefferson County. Virginia 29: Decem: 1859
I, Hannah J Hall, do hereby certify, that Mr. John H Allstadt's negro man, Ben, who died in the County Jail of this County, on 31st October 1859, has been known to me, since he was a child, (and my knowledge is derived from constant acquaintance with him from a child, being myself an inmate of the family during all that time,) and that he was, before his death entirely healthy and sound, and never was sick to my knowledge a single day. He was about 20 years of age, likely and strong. He was one of the ngro slaves of Mr Allstadt, taken from his residence by John Brown's party on the night of the 16th October last and carried by them, to Harper's Ferry.
