1 Notes from: "The Butler Family in America" Compiled by Wm. D. Butler, #6706 Va. ave. St. Louis MO.; John Cromwell Butler, late of Denver, Colo., and Joseph Marion Butler of Chicago Ill. Pub 1909. by the Shalleross Pub. Co. St Louis Mo. Illustrated. It states that the Butler Coat of Arms (illustrated therein) may be used by the descendants of Seijner Thomas Butler of Carlisle and all the Revolutionary stock" are entitled to use the family crest." I James Butler born in his fathers (Thomas') estate in the parish of Colkenny, Co. Wicklow, Ireland in 1718. He did not come to America, but that his brother Thomas Butler also born on the above estate in 1720 came to America with 3 sons in 1748 and settled in Lancaster Co. (Pa.) William, the son of above James, came to this county in 1759. and joined his uncle Thomas. John and Thomas, the sons of James came to Penna [Pennsylvania] about same time as their bro. William did. Richard a full cousin,- was ensign in 1764 Thomas returned to Carlisle in 1760 and established a Gunshop (illustration of same). Eight of his children were born in this country and all but one who d. [died] inf. [infant] - grew up ardent Americans. Two daus [daughters] of James (above) Jane and Sarah - joined their relations here and were later married James of Ireland (above) b. 1718 m. 1739. His eldest son Thomas b. 2 Jan. 1740, in Ireland d. Penna 1832; his 2d son - William b. Ireland July 1743, d. May 4 1839. at Harrisonburg Crawford Co. Pa. The 3rd son John, b. Dublin 1745, d. Williams Co. Ohio, in 1830. Jane Butler the oldest dau b. Dublin, 1747 m. Wm Mahan in this country and d. In 1830. The youngest dau. Sarah Butler b. Ireland 1747 II Thomas Butler the other and younger of the two brothers, & sons of Thomas Jr. b. Ireland 1720, m. 26 oct. 1741 Eleanor Parker, dau. Of Anthony Parker of Carey, Co. Wexford, Ireland. She was b. 26 oct. 1722. They had 11 ch. two of whom d in infancy - viz: :- I. Richard 2nd son. b. Parish of St Bridget, Dublin Ireland April 1, 1743 was killed in Battle of the Miami, Ohio Nov. 4, 1791 II. William- b. St Andrews parish London, (or Dublin) 6 Jan. 1745 d Pittsburg Pa 16 May 1789. III. Thomas b. St Andrews parish 15 Nov. 1746, d of yellow fever near New Orleans 7th Sept. 1805. IV. Edward b. St Bridgets parish, Dublin, 22 May 1748 d 19 July 1748 V. Mary, Eld. Dau b.
