This indenture made this the 2nd day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty five between Jesse Parker and John Davis Overseers of the poor of the lower district of Nottoway Parrish in the county of Southampton of the one part and Elijah Nelms of the aforesaid county and parish witnesseth that the said overseers of the poor have put, placed, and bound and by these presents; do put, place, and bind John Buck (FN) [Free Negro] of the age of eighteen years to be an apprentice with him the said Elijah Nelms to dwell from the date of these presents until the said John Buck shall come to the age of twenty one years according the act of general assembly in that case made and provided, by and during all which term and time the said John Buck shall the said Elijah Nelms his said master according to the power wit and ability of him the said John Buck and the said Elijah Nelms for his part and for himself his executors and administrators doth hereby promise and covenant to and with the and with the said overseers of the poor and every of them their executors and administrators and theirs and every of their successors for the time being and to and with the said John Buck to instruct in the craft mistery [mystery] and occupation of a farmer that he the said Elijah Nelms now useth after the best manner manner that he can or may teach or inform or cause to be taught, instructed or informed as much as there unto belongeth or in any wise appertaineth; the said Elijah Nelms shall also find and allow to the said John Buck sufficient
