This indenture made this 15th day of September one thousand eight hundred and twenty between Tho Jones[,] Carr Bowers[,] and Jesse Parker overseers of the poor of Nottoway Parish (lower district) of the county of So.hampton [Southampton] of the one part and Tho Williams of the said county & Parish of the other part Witnesseth that the sd [said] Tho Jones[,] Carr Bowers & Jesse Parker overseers of the poor aforesaid hath put placed and bound a free negro boy of the age of twelve years old called Moses Chappel, to be an apprentice with him the said Tho Williams to dwell from the date of these presents untill the said Moses Chappel shall come to the age of twenty one years old. according to the act of the General Assembly in that case made and provided, which time and term the said Moses Chappel shall the said Tho Williams his said Master well & faithfully serve in all such lawful business as the sd Moses Chappel shall be put unto by his sd. Master according to the wit & ability of him the said Moses Chappel and honestly & obediently in all things shall behave himself towards his sd. master and honestly & orderly towards the rest of the family of the sd. Tho Williams & the sd. Tho Williams for his part for himself his Extrs & admrs. doth hereby promise and covenant to and with sd. overseers of the poor and every of them their and every of their Extrs & Admrs. & their and every of their successors for the time being & to & with the sd. Moses Chappel the sd. Tho Williams shall the sd. Moses Chappel in craft mistery & occupation of farming which he the sd. Tho Williams now useth after the best manner that he can or may instruct & inform or cause to be taught instructed & informed as much as
