This Indenture made this 24th day of March in the year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and thirty two and in the 56th year of our independence between Henry Winfree & Richd. T. Moseley overseers of the poor in the County of Chesterfield and State of Virginia of the one part and Eldridge Smith Jr of the other part, witnesseth, that the said Henry Winfree & Richd. T. Moseley overseers of the poor as aforesaid by virtue of an order of the court of the county aforesaid bearing date the 12th day of March 1832, have put and placed and by these presents do put place and bind Martha Simons a girl of color of the age of eight years to be an apprentice with him the said Eldridge Smith Jr to dwell from the date of these presents until the said Martha Simons shall become to the age of eighteen years according to the Act of the General Assembly in that case made & provided. By and during all which time and term the said Martha Simons shall the said Smith her master well and faithfully serve in all such lawful business as the said Martha Simons shall be put unto by her said master according to the power wit and ability of her the said Martha Simons and honestly and obediently in all things shall behave herself towards her said master and honestly and orderly towards her said masters family. And the said Eldridge Smith jr for his part for himself his heirs, executors and administrators doth hereby promise and covenant to and with the said overseers of the poor and every of them, their and every of their successors for the time being, and to and with the said Martha Simons that the said smith shall the said Martha Simons in the craft mystery and occupation of a seamstress which he the said Eldridge Smith now useth in his family after the best manner that he can or may teach, instruct and inform, or cause to be taught, instructed and informed as much as therewith becometh, belongeth or appertaineth; and the said Eldridge Smith Jr shall also find and allow unto the said apprentice sufficient meat, drink, apparel washing, lodging and other things needful or meet for an apprentice during the term aforesaid.
