This Indenture made this fifteenth day of November one Thousand Eight Hundred & Twenty eight between Reubin T Sims & Merrit Booker Oversees of the Poor for District No. One in the County of Cumberland of the one part & Sam'l Hix of the said County of the other part Witnesseth That the said Reuben T Sims & Merrit Booker, overseers of the poor as aforesaid, by virtue of an order of the Court of the County aforesaid, bearing date October Court 1825, have put & bound, and by these presents do place & bind Martha Cousins a poor Girl of Colour whose Mother Jane Cousins (a free woman of Coulour) is dead, of the age of Five years last March, (being born March 1823) to be an apprentice with him the said Sam'l Hix and as an apprentice with him the said Sam'l Hix to dwell from the date of these presents until the said Martha shall come to the age of Twenty one years, according to the act of the Gen'l Assembly in that case made & provided. By and during all which time the said Martha Cousins shall the said Sam'l Hix her said Master well & faithfully serve, in all such lawfull business as the said Martha shall be put unto by her said Master, according to the power & ability of her the said Martha Cousins, & Honestly & obediently in all things shall behave herself towards her said master, & Honestly & orderly towards the rest of the family of the Said Sam'l Hix. and the said Sam'l Hix for his part, for himself his Heirs &c doth hereby covenant to & with the said overseers of the Poor and every of them & their successors for the time being, & to & with the said Martha, that he the said Sam'l Hix shall the said Martha in the Craft & Mistery & occupation of House Keeping which he the said Sam'l is now engaged in, inform after the best Manner he can or cause to be taught informed or instructed as much thereunto belongeth or in any Wise appertaineth: And the the said Sam'l shall find and allow to the said apprentice sufficient Meat, Drink, and apparel, Washing, lodging & all other things needful for an apprentice during the term aforesaid. And also the said Sam'l shall furnish the said Martha with a suit of clothes & shall pay her the sum of Twelve Dollars, at the expiration of her aforesaid term.
