Ing in the afternoon in Boydton, and after that they will drive you over to Clarksville for the meeting there and will put you up for the night.
It may be advisable for you to return to Boydton the next day if you do not effect the organization after your address at the Court.
Unfortunately, Miss Roberts thinks it is not a good time for a meeting in Chase City. They have just finished with their Fair at Chase City, where they had a booth and distributed literature etc.
I wrote Col. Thos. F. Goode of Boydton asking his co-operation, and I trust he will turn up on the occasion, though he has not written to us, possibly because of his absence with the Governor as a member of his staff.
I am enclosing Mrs. Catt’s letter, of September, 18, which I think should be returned to Headquarters for our file as soon as you have digested it. It is an impossible program for Virginia at present. As to a series of Federal Amendment “Stories” in the newspapers, I fear they would carry little weight even if published, in as much as we cannot put any pressure behind them. If, however, you mean simply an account of how various other States in the Union are to celebrate on October, 21, it might be a good idea for you to send them out to leading newspapers in the State in time for October, 21.
I can’t for the life of me think of the names of any women prominent in the State, except the wives of Congressmen, and they are all anti-suffragists. I do not imagine that they would be willing to go to Washington. The presidents of other State organizations, such as Mary Munford, Mrs. Hoge, W. C. T. U., Mrs. Burruss, Mothers’ Clubs, Miss Cummings, State Federation of Womans' Clubs, are, as you know, refusing to come out for suffrage at all. Mrs. Kate Waller Barrett might.
I am sorry to say that Mrs. McClung, the Canadian speaker is unable to go to Norfolk for the State convention, but Dr. Anna Shaw is engaged for November, 9, the first evening of the meeting. The Convention dates are, November, 8, 9, 10. The 8th is to be given over to sessions of the Executive Council. We are sending out the Bulletin to all Leagues in a few days, which will give full details.
