Stafford County December 8th 1877 I hereby certify that I reside within one mile of Mrs. Margaret Adie, and that her Negro Man Joe was well known to me, having a Wife on my Farm. I have always considered him one of the most valuable farm negroes in this neighbourhood - he was committed to the Jail of this county in December last, from whence he made his escape about six weeks after and has not been seen or heard of since, except by his wife on the night on which he broke jail, - Joe was twenty seven or eight years old when he absconded. given under my &c [etc.] William H Fitzhugh We the subscribers do hereby certify that the negro man Joe above described was young Healthy and valuable.
