Working for & against Harry Byrd for Governor The last big state thrust against equal suffrage During the 1918 campaign for governor of Va. we had the greatest expectations that ever arose in our work. Miss Adele Clark of Richmond saw a Winchester Star of Mar 9 having an article on the editorial page entitled "Where brains & fools part company." The article maligned women of the suffrage leage closing then with negroe women & bad women, claiming "they would sell their votes even as they have sold their souls, that the power-seeking suffragettes, the underworld women & the negro women will always be ready to vote while the real woman will shrink from contact with such persons & stay at home." Ending with the question "Do we face Reconstruction again? No, there were no women in power at that time! No fear at this late date, 1936, we certainly have proven that such fears arise from guilty conscience which woman never had.
