At an intermediate Term of the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery for the City of Norfolk continued by adjournment and held at the Courthouse of the said City on Tuesday the nineteenth day of January Eighteen hundred and forty seven.

John S Millson Trustee &c Plaintiff against } In Detinue J F Jones Defendant } This day came the parties by their Attornies and thereupon came a Jury to wit: William Walke, Jr, Jacob Shuster, William S. Dix, Thomas Borhaw, H N Buckbront, James S. Gaskins, Eugene N Bobee, John Herrington, Edward Sales, Brock Wheeler, Pearson Owens and William Kyte who being elected tried and Sworn the truth to speak upon the issue joined, upon their oath do say, that the Defendant doth detain the Negro Male Slave named Bill in the Declaration mentioned, in manner and form as the Plaintiff against him hath Complained and that the said Slave is of the price of Two hundred and twenty dollars, and they do assess the plaintiff's damages by occasion of the detention of the said Slave to five dollars besides his Costs. Therefore it is Considered by the Court that the Plaintiff recover against the Defendant the Negro Male Slave named Bill aforesaid of the price aforesaid if he may be had, but if not, then the price of him aforesaid, together with his damages assessed as aforesaid and his costs by him about his Suit in this behalf expended. And the said Defendant in mercy &c. Memorandum: At the trial of this Cause the Defendant by his attorney excepted to an opinion of the Court given against him on the said trial and by Consent of the parties the Defendant's Bill of exceptions is to be signed at a future day of this term.
