To the Honble the speaker & members of the General Assembly the petition of Thomas Mason showeth That your petitioner is possessed of the negroe slaves herein after named to wit Alice, Charles, Jenny, Milly, Sam, Bob, Jack & [illegible] all of whom were born within this commonwealth. Your petitioner is also the owner of lands in Virginia & in Maryland. By the laws of Maryland persons owning lands in both states & residing in either may remove their slaves from Virginia to Maryland for the special purpose of working their own lands but not for the purpose of selling or hiring them to others. About two years past your orator removed the slaves herein before named to Maryland for the special purpose of working them on his own lands in that state & beleiving at the time that it woud be in his power to bring them back whenever the situation of his affairs shoud make it adviseable for him to do so. Your orator is now sollicitous to cultivate some of his lands in Virginia with the slaves sent from this state to Maryland as above mentiond but is advisd that under the law of this Commonwealth he woud hazard the loss of them by doing so. Your petitioner therefore humbly prays that an act may pass authorizing him to bring back to Virginia the slaves above enumerated & to hold them in like manner as if they had never been carried into Maryland or in some other manner to suspend the operation of the laws of the common wealth as to the said Slaves. And your petitioner will ever pray &c
