Harpers Ferry, Virginia 31st Dec. 1859 I attended, as Physician, Ary, the female negro slave of Mr. John H. Allstadt. She is the mother of "Ben" another of his slaves, who died in jail. She was taken sick soon after she returned from Charlestown, in the jail of which town, she was employed in nursing her son Ben. Her disease, of which she died, was Typhoid Fever, running its course to death in ten days. I conscientiously believe, and hereby certify, that the said woman's sickness and death were referrible alone to distress and anguish of mind, consequent upon the capture of her children, of whom Ben, was one, and his death in jail. I think it proper here to state, that others of the slaves of Mr. Allstadt, are now and have been sick and their disease is entirely referrible to the fright caused by their capture and exposure, on the 16th of Oct. last.
