The Secretary of the Navy Washington December 7, 1942

My dear Mrs. Smith: I desire to offer to you my personal condolence in the heroic death of your husband, Lieutenant Commander Philip Thomas Smith, Jr., United States Navy, which occurred on November 13, 1942, as the result of an engagement with the enemy. It is hoped that you may find comfort in the though that he gave his life for his country, upholding the highest traditions of the Navy, while participating in the historic victory of the Solomon Islands. The Navy shares in your sense of bereavement and will miss the services of a valued officer. Sincerely yours, Frank Knox The Secretary of the Navy Mrs. Philip Thomas Smith, 630 East Lincoln Avenue, Mt. Vernon, New York.
